It is essential to insure your trip and have medical cover, we need proof that you have done so. This can be done through insurance brokers such as Access America (www.accessamerica.com). You need coverage for emergency medical evacuation to a local hospital and also to get you back home in the case of a serious emergency. You also need cover to protect yourself against last minute non arrival for any reasons etc. The more cover you have the less anything is likely to happen and the less you need to worry. Accidents do happen - we are going to be in areas with dangerous animals that behave unpredictably.
Malaria is prevalent in most parts of Africa where there is good wildlife viewing although the chances of you contracting malaria are highly unlikely. It is still best to consult your doctor on what prophylaxis you should take, if any.
One of the best forms of protection against malaria is to wear long sleeves and long trousers and spray any exposed areas of skin with insect repellant. All the camps I use have insect spray in the rooms/tents.
